If the driven gear is installed incorrectly, the dimple will be approximately 180 degrees opposite of the rotor segment when the gear is installed in the distributor. With the piston on the compression stroke and at top dead center, the crankshaft balancer alignment mark must align with the engine front cover tab and the crankshaft balancer alignment mark must align with the engine front cover tab.Īlign white paint mark on the bottom stem of the distributor, and the pre-drilled indent hole in the bottom of the gear. The engine front cover has 2 alignment tabs and the crankshaft balancer has 2 alignment marks (spaced 90 degrees apart) which are used for positioning number 1 piston at top dead center (TDC). IMPORTANT: Rotate the number 1 cylinder to top dead center (TDC) of the compression stroke. Now see where your rotor is pointing, it should be pointing where number spark plug wire is. You should then see the timing marks, line them up at zero. You can safely do this by using a compression gauge and us the part that goes in the spark plug hole and put your finger over the hole on the hose, crank the engine until your finger blows your finger off the hole. To do this you need to get the number one cylinder on the compression stroke, take out the number one spark plug and crank the engine until the compression blows out of the spark plug hole. You will probably need to re-time the ignition timing with the engine. If you put a pick-up coil in you obviously had to take out the distributor, did you put the distributor in with the rotor pointing in the same position that it came out? I don't know how you can check the timing if the engine won't start. Yes the pickup coil can cause a no start condition. Try these few suggestions and get back to me with the results. This may or may not help you but it wouldn't hurt to look into. I replaced the ignition coil and the problem went away. The coil was weak where it couldn't supply the strong spark needed for a rich mixture once I got it started it ran fine all day. I had a problem once where the car wouldn't start in the morning. If there is not any two second prime of the fuel pump in the morning or if the fuel pressure leaks down after a certain amount of time then it could give you a hard start condition in the morning. A fuel pressure test still should be made to see if there is fuel pressure available when you start the engine in the morning. The fuel pressure should be good if you can drive around all day with no problem. The mechanic will be able to tell by looking at the sensor temperature and the outside temperature and be able to determine if the sensor is bad.

If the sensor is faulty it may not set a code but it could be calibrated wrong where the computer thinks the engine is warmer than it really is and won't deliver the rich mixture needed to start the engine.
With fuel injection systems the engine relies on the engine (coolant) temperature sensor signal for the proper fuel mixture in the morning when the engine is cold. Your best bet is to have someone check to see if there are any trouble codes stored in the computer memory.
